In 1936 a new school opened its doors. It was the School of Public Affairs and Social Work at Wayne University. This was the humble beginning of the School of Social Work we see today. It wasn’t always here at 5447 Woodward Avenue.
The School of Social Work has a rich history. It started offering undergraduate courses in the 1920s at Detroit City College. In 1931 its curriculum was formalized to include casework. The school experienced significant growth over the years. It even had separate programs for Black students in the 1970s.
For many years the School of Social Work called the Thompson Home its home. This historic Italio-Victorian building was a landmark. It was renovated to house the school for over 20 years. In 1991 the school moved to the Thompson Home. However in 2016 it moved again to its current location.
