Sweeping panoramas and whispering winds. That’s how I would describe Great Brewster Island. This 18-acre island, nestled within the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, feels worlds away from the bustling city, yet lies only 9 miles offshore. Great Brewster Island isn’t your typical harbor island. It rises over 100 feet above sea level, a drumlin shaped by ancient glaciers, unlike its lower, rocky neighbors. Imagine standing atop this island, feeling the wind whip through the grasses and common reeds, with the cries of gulls echoing around you. These gulls, fiercely protective of their nests, dominate the island, making access, which is by private boat only, a challenge during nesting season.
Great Brewster Island carries the name of William Brewster, the Plymouth Colony’s first preacher and teacher, a legacy shared with its neighboring islands: Little Brewster, Middle Brewster, and Outer Brewster. The island’s history holds tales of remarkable women. In 1891, four women bravely defied convention and spent two weeks documenting their experiences on Great Brewster Island, a radical act for the time. Their writings offer a unique glimpse into life on the island over a century ago. The island later served a different purpose. During World War II, Great Brewster Island became part of a vital military reservation. Soldiers stationed here manned an observation post, complete with 90mm rapid-fire guns and searchlight stations. This strategic location played a key role in controlling the harbor’s minefield, protecting Boston from potential enemy attacks.
Beyond its military past, Great Brewster Island also holds traces of quieter times. Foundations of summer cottages, once occupied by local families, whisper stories of leisurely summers spent by the sea. The island’s natural beauty is also striking. From its highest point, you can see four different lighthouses, including the historic Boston Light. The island boasts a diverse ecosystem. Apple trees and pear trees mingle with sumac and beach roses. A salt marsh thrives, providing a haven for wildlife. Tidal pools teem with life, inviting exploration. Look closely, and you might spot lobster boats plying the waters or private vessels fishing amongst the rocky outcroppings.
