Resting peacefully in North Bergen, New Jersey, the Flower Hill Cemetery holds stories of lives lived and legacies left behind. Established in 1873, Flower Hill Cemetery offers a serene escape from the urban bustle. It is also next to Hoboken Cemetery and Machpelah Cemetery.

In 1900 tragedy struck on the North River. A fire consumed the SS Saale and SS Bremen. Many victims were laid to rest here at Flower Hill Cemetery. The shipping company purchased gravesites in Flower Hill and adjacent cemeteries for those who perished in the massive fire.

Among the countless headstones, some stand out. Look for Decatur Dorsey’s. He was a Civil War soldier and Medal of Honor recipient. Christian Woerner, also a Civil War soldier, is buried here. Also, find the side-by-side headstones of Horace Shields and Freeman Norris. They were World War I Army privates. They died a month apart in 1949.

One unique memorial is the faux tree-trunk for Frank and Sally Bello. Their children dedicated it. The Guidotti plot is especially poignant. It features a four-foot-tall headstone. A column with curled leaves etching adorns it. A tree branch cross and roses sit atop the column. Oval spaces are chiseled for four children, some of which are filled.

Ed Alberian, a children’s television actor, also rests here. Frank J. Bart, a World War I Medal of Honor recipient, is interred at Flower Hill Cemetery. Charles Schreyvogel, a painter known for Western scenes, found his final resting place here.

Flower Hill Cemetery also holds a Commonwealth war grave. It is for a Royal Marine Light Infantry Private of World War I. The cemetery is a place where history and remembrance meet. As you wander through Flower Hill Cemetery, consider the lives and stories etched in stone. Each marker whispers a tale of a person. These people helped shape the world we know today. Flower Hill Cemetery stands as a testament to their enduring impact.
