The main temple building is a stunning sight. Three floors two connected buildings each filled with intricate details. A playful laughing Buddha greets you on the ground floor. This is Budai a famous Chinese monk revered as a deity. He’s flanked by four Chinese sages representing wisdom and philosophy.
Ascend the stairs to the second floor. It feels like entering a mystical cave filled with bronze images of Taoist Confucian and Buddhist sages. Outside you’ll find a bell tower and drum adding to the temple’s rich soundscape. A newer building connected by a walkway houses a standing Buddha and two Chinese deities.
Climb to the highest level for breathtaking views. A magnificent pagoda stands tall its eight floors adorned with various deities. The pagoda officially named Mahathat Chedi Prajonchatri Thai-Chin Charoen offers a panoramic view of the Chao Phraya River and the vibrant city of Bangkok. On the top floor you will find a reclining Buddha. On the third floor Guan Yin the goddess of mercy watches over all.
Explore the temple grounds. Pass through a tall entrance arch inscribed with “peace and serenity in the eastern sun.” Notice the small shrine to a female ghost believed to seduce men in their dreams. Daily offerings appease her. In the courtyard a covered altar is decorated with dragons and flowers small dragon-birds adorning its roof. A large urn-shaped cremation oven stands nearby a testament to funeral rituals. A dragon wall protects the temple from malevolent spirits.
