Rising before us is the Santo Niño Chapel. It is also known as Senior Citizens’ Park Chapel. This Roman Catholic chapel stands proudly in Cebu City. It was inaugurated in 2022. The Santo Niño Chapel was quickly celebrated as a symbol of Cebu. Some called it an iconic landmark.

Let’s delve into the story of this special place. The Senior Citizens’ Park was opened in 2012. It is across from the city hall executive building. The park spans over 3700 square meters. The Santo Niño Chapel was constructed in the park’s heart. Cebu2World built it. This is a subsidiary of Megawide. The chapel can accommodate 150 people. It occupies 300 square meters.

Initially, the Santo Niño Chapel was intended to symbolize prosperity. It was to welcome the New Year and the Sinulog Festival. However, it gained a deeper meaning. After Typhoon Odette devastated the region in 2021, it became a symbol of hope. Archbishop Jose Palma blessed the chapel on Easter Sunday in April 2022.

Notice the chapel’s unique wave-like design. It draws inspiration from several sources. The crown of the Sto. Niño de Cebu is one. The Sinulog Festival’s dance is another. Even the name Cebu influenced the design. “Sugbo” means waves in the local tongue. The Santo Niño Chapel features a round shape. It has a six-lobed roof. The roof’s arcs soar and dip creating a fluid, dynamic form. The design shares similarities with the Mactan International Airport Terminal 2. Megawide also designed that.

The most striking feature is the 30-foot image of Sto. Niño de Cebu. It sits atop the roof. This statue is made of fiberglass resin. It faces the Mactan Channel. It directs its gaze toward Nuestra Señora de Regla of Lapu-Lapu City. This placement is said to allow the Son to pay homage to the Mother.

The feast of Sto. Niño de Cebu occurs every January. The Santo Niño Chapel holds a mass every Sunday. It is from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Louie Ferrer, chair of Cebu2World, considers the Santo Niño Chapel a landmark. It unites Cebuanos. It also symbolizes the modernization of Carbon Public Market. The chapel is inspired by the Sto. Nino’s crown. The fluid motion of the Sinulog dance also served as an inspiration.
