Feel the gentle sway beneath your feet. You are standing on the Squibb Park Bridge a marvel of modern engineering and a testament to Brooklyn’s enduring spirit. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a 450-foot-long pathway connecting Brooklyn Heights to Brooklyn Bridge Park. It’s a gateway to breathtaking views of the Lower Manhattan skyline. But its story goes deeper than just stunning panoramas.

The Squibb Park Bridge is named for Dr Edward Robinson Squibb. He was a naval surgeon and the founder of Squibb Pharmaceuticals later known as Bristol-Myers Squibb. Squibb was a pioneer in anesthesia. He also championed pure food and drug laws. His first laboratory stood right here. Or rather very near this very spot. If you look closely at the old smokestacks you might still see the name Squibb.

The park itself was built in the late 1940s. Robert Moses the powerful Parks Commissioner played a key role in its creation. The bridge however arrived much later. This unique structure made of black locust timber bronze and galvanized steel opened in early 2013. It’s designed with a flexible cable system. This is an inverted suspension system. It allows the bridge to bounce slightly. A design feature that might be unusual but adds to its charm.

The bridge’s design was inspired by trail bridges found in national parks. It adds a touch of rustic charm to the cityscape. This playful bounce was a deliberate choice. But it caused some unexpected problems. In 2014 the bridge was closed for repairs. The bouncing had become excessive. Engineers studied the movement extensively. They investigated the possible effects of nearby construction.

The Squibb Park Bridge reopened. It’s still here swaying gently with each step. A reminder of its unique design and the ongoing efforts to maintain its structural integrity. The bridge stands as a symbol of innovation. A testament to resilience. It offers a unique experience. One that combines engineering ingenuity with stunning views. It’s a perfect blend of history and contemporary design. So take a moment soak it all in. Feel the bounce. Enjoy the view. Experience the Squibb Park Bridge.
