Chabad of Cebu offers a spiritual home for both locals and travelers. Rabbi Mendy and Devorah Leah Axelrod lead this community. They provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Chabad of Cebu is located on Opal Street in Casals Village, Mabolo. The Axelrods moved to the Philippines in 2019. They initially established a Chabad house in Boracay. After the pandemic, they relocated to Cebu. Chabad of Cebu serves around 150 Jewish individuals. Many are Israelis working in the area. Others come from diverse backgrounds. Some are tourists and backpackers exploring the Philippines. Chabad of Cebu hosts Shabbat and holiday feasts. They also offer a kosher restaurant. They even provide Jewish burial rites when needed. Interestingly, monthly kosher chicken slaughters take place just a short drive from Chabad of Cebu. The community also plans to build a permanent synagogue in the future. The Chabad house currently serves as the synagogue. They also hope to build a mikveh. The Axelrods and Chabad of Cebu truly embody the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish faith. They create a sense of belonging in a far-off land.
