Did you know that the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel in Cebu City once played a crucial role in protecting a beloved religious icon? Let’s step back in time to World War II. Cebu City was enduring heavy bombardment by American forces. The Sto. Niño Church, home to the revered image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu, suffered damage. An explosive even landed near the altar, miraculously sparing the image. However, the precarious situation prompted the Augustinian priests to seek a safer haven for the sacred statue. They found it in the monastery chapel of the Redemptorists, the predecessors of the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel. The image was carefully placed within a bomb-proof vault, tucked away at the rear of the altar, where it remained safe for seven months. The Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, then a simpler monastery chapel unveiled in 1929, became a sanctuary for the Sto. Niño. This act of safeguarding cemented its significance in the religious history of Cebu City. Fast forward to June 1950, the Redemptorist Church, now known as the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, was completed under the leadership of Fr. Luke Hartingan. The church’s Romanesque design, with its twin bell towers flanking the facade and an ornate portico at the entrance, became a recognizable landmark. Above the portico, the church wall recedes in varying levels, culminating in a rose window that depicts the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The interior of the church, with its three naves, vaulted ceiling, and clerestory windows, creates a tranquil space for worship. The church was formally declared a parish in 1971. The legacy of the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel extends beyond its architecture and wartime role. It continues to serve as a vibrant spiritual center, holding regular masses and hosting the annual feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help every third Sunday of June. So, the next time you see the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, remember its hidden history and the role it played in preserving a cherished symbol of faith.
