Gazing upwards, what’s the first thing that strikes you about the Catedral de Córdoba? For me, it’s the sheer scale of it, this grand dame of Córdoba. The Catedral de Córdoba. Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dominates the skyline. It whispers tales of centuries past. This cathedral isn’t just a religious building. It’s a living testament to Argentina’s rich history and cultural heritage. Construction began in 1582. Its official name is Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, meaning Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. But locals simply call it the Catedral de Córdoba. It’s considered the fourth Wonder of Córdoba, a testament to its architectural significance. The Catedral de Córdoba stands proudly in the historic heart of the city. It faces the western side of Plaza San Martín, the old main square. Its main facade points east-south-east, unusual for churches of its time. They typically oriented their altars towards Jerusalem. The blend of architectural styles is truly captivating. You’ll see Renaissance elements mingling with Spanish colonial baroque, neoclassicism, and even hints of Mudéjar design. The main nave, with its high barrel vault, is richly decorated. Gilded moldings and carvings adorn every surface. Ancient sculptures of various saints stand as testaments to artistry and faith. Many are articulated and dressed in rich clothing. Light filters through the lunettes in the central nave’s vault. The grand dome, where the central nave and transept meet, is simply breathtaking. Its size and intricate decoration are awe-inspiring. Four octagonal turrets flank the dome, providing structural support and visual interest. Look closely at the exterior. You’ll see pairs of columns, large fin-like structures, and pyramidal pinnacles. Curved windows add to the dome’s elegance. The two main towers hold carillons. The southeast tower also boasts a large clock. Notice the curious figures sculpted on the tower corners. They appear to be playing trumpets while dressed in indigenous attire. Inside, near the entrance, lie the sarcophagi of José María Paz and his wife, Margarita Weild. Also here is the urn containing the remains of Dean Gregorio Funes. In the crypts below rest Bishop Hernando de Trejo y Sanabria, the first rector of Argentina’s first university, and Fray Mamerto Esquiú. The high altar, crafted largely from embossed silver from Alto Perú, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The cathedral’s treasury holds a collection of ex-votos, gold and silver pieces, and jewels donated by the faithful. Sadly, some of this treasure has been looted. The Catedral de Córdoba is the oldest, still-functioning colonial building in Argentina. It’s a National Historic Monument, a symbol of the nation’s past and a beacon of faith for the present.
