“Did you know that Grundschule Königshufen has a motto?” a small girl, no older than seven, piped up, tugging at her father’s sleeve. He smiled, kneeling down. “No, I didn’t sweetheart. What is it?” “It’s ‘We offer space and opportunities for harmonious coexistence of disabled and non-disabled children’,” she declared proudly. This inclusive spirit permeates every corner of Grundschule Königshufen, here in Görlitz. The school, recently renovated in 2023, is a testament to the community’s dedication to education. The children returned from their autumn break to a transformed space, a true “jewel” as the city calls it. Imagine, new classrooms, refurbished hallways, and redesigned courtyards. Even the Mayor, Octavian Ursu, and Headmaster Steffen Hanke were there to greet the excited students with apples from the city farm on their desks. The renovation was a significant undertaking, starting with fire safety improvements in April 2020. This involved new fire doors, escape routes, and updated electrical and heating systems. The later phases, beginning in January 2022, focused on a complete overhaul. New pipes, floors, ceilings, doors, and a thermal insulation facade were installed. The school even received electronically controlled sunshades. The cost? While the final figures aren’t in, it represents a substantial investment in the future of the Grundschule Königshufen and its students. Inside the vibrant classrooms, you’ll find dedicated teachers guiding pupils from grades 1 through 4. Each class, from the eager first-graders learning their numbers to the soon-to-graduate fourth-graders preparing for secondary school, has its own unique personality. The 4a, for example, is buzzing with anticipation for their class trip to Reichwalde, while the 4b proudly helps patrol the playground. The 3a experienced a mini-election drama with a tied vote for class representative. They’re also excitedly preparing for a circus project. The younger classes, full of energy and enthusiasm, are diving into the wonders of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Field trips to the zoo and nature walks add to their adventures. Grundschule Königshufen isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living, breathing testament to the power of community and the importance of inclusive education.
