U9 – Koinè stands as part of the University of Milan – Bicocca. But U9 – Koinè is more than just a university building. Its name itself reveals a deeper purpose.
Koinè stems from a Greek term meaning “common language”. It signifies shared ideals and cultural or spiritual interests. The name reflects the cooperative’s commitment to cooperation.
The Koinè social cooperative has a rich history. It started in 1989. Two members of the Abacus cooperative decided to reinvest their assets into social projects. This marked the official beginning of Koinè’s work in social and educational services.
In 1993 Koinè was recognized as a social cooperative. It was certified as “onlus” under Italian law in 2004. Koinè’s first childhood service began in Novate Milanese. “Il Giardino d’Inverno” was a micro-nursery. It was also a community space for adults and children.
The cooperative soon expanded. In 1994, it launched its first service for youth and families. This project supported disadvantaged children in Bareggio. Koinè currently operates in social services. Its main focuses are childhood, youth, families, environment, culture and training.
Koinè embraces the values of cooperation. They focus on trust and quality relationships. These relationships are with people, the community, and the territory.
Today U9 – Koinè stands as a testament to those values. It is a place designed for creating and thinking. This space fosters collaboration and innovation. It embodies the spirit of its name.
