In 1909 a cornerstone was laid. It marked the beginning of Sha’arei Hesed. This wasn’t just any neighborhood. Sha’arei Hesed was founded by disciples of the Vilna Gaon. They sought to create a community deeply rooted in Torah Law.

Sha’arei Hesed or Sha’arei Chessed meaning Gates of Loving-Kindness is a neighborhood in central Jerusalem. It borders Rehavia Nahlaot and the Wolfson Towers. Rabbi Shmuel Salant the Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Jerusalem laid the cornerstone. He and Rabbi Naftali Porush secured donations from abroad. The funds built small apartments for religious Jews. The first 114 houses were built on long narrow plots. Each had a small yard.

Sha’arei Hesed’s early development contrasts sharply with its neighbor Rehavia. Rehavia aimed to be a garden community for intellectuals and professionals. Sha’arei Hesed prioritized strict adherence to Torah law. This difference is reflected in their unique architectural styles and community ethos. Interestingly Sha’arei Hesed’s early residents were Ashkenazi. In more recent times the neighborhood’s character has shifted. It’s become predominantly Haredi with many families from abroad. Many homes have been purchased by affluent Orthodox Jewish families. This influx of new residents contributes to the gentrification of the area.

Today Sha’arei Hesed houses several yeshivas. Maalos Hatorah Medrash Shmuel and Noam HaTalmud are among them. Many synagogues including the Gra Shul are located there. Keren Kayemet Street boasts shops restaurants and the Wolfson Shopping Center. This area is conveniently close to Ben Yehuda Street the Machane Yehuda market and most hotels. It is a vibrant and dynamic community. Yet it retains a palpable sense of its devout past. The legacy of the Vilna Gaon’s disciples remains visible. It is written in the stones of the houses and in the spirit of its residents. So as you stand here imagine the history unfolding before you. Imagine the dedication the devotion and the community spirit that built Sha’arei Hesed. It’s a story of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Jerusalem.
