Ever felt the rush of a helicopter’s blades overhead? The East 34th Street Heliport offers that thrill. Right here on the East River Greenway you stand at the heart of New York City’s unique aviation history.

The East 34th Street Heliport isn’t just a place for helicopters to land. It’s a vital part of Manhattan’s waterfront. Opened on June 16 1972 it was designed to handle approximately 20 private and charter flights daily. This public heliport owned by New York City is managed by the Economic Development Corporation. Its location between the East River and the FDR Drive viaduct is key. It solved a major problem. Before the heliport was built officials worried about noise pollution and safety concerns from helicopters flying over Manhattan. The East 34th Street Heliport provided a solution. It offered a convenient location with minimal disruption to the city.

The heliport’s story is filled with twists and turns. Initially built to handle small helicopters it aimed for much bigger things. Plans included a pier extending into the East River to accommodate larger aircraft. This would have dramatically increased the number of flights. The reality however was different. Island Helicopters initially operated the heliport. They faced challenges and eventually declared bankruptcy. This was not the only problem the heliport faced. Noise complaints from nearby residents led to restrictions on flight times. The heliport was once considered the busiest public-use heliport globally. Later scheduled service from the East 34th Street Heliport to JFK and Newark was offered. This service ended in 2009. However the East 34th Street Heliport’s future remains bright. It’s preparing for a new era of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Charging stations are planned. New York City aims to be a major hub for eVTOL air taxis.

Imagine the sounds of the city blending with the whir of helicopter rotors. Smell the fresh river air and feel the ground vibrate slightly under your feet. Picture the sleek helicopters arriving and departing. This small piece of land represents not only a vital transportation link but also a chapter in the city’s ongoing evolution.

Today the East 34th Street Heliport is a testament to resilience and adaptation. It has weathered many storms both literally and figuratively. It continues to play a key role in New York City’s transportation network. It prepares for a future with new technologies that will change the face of urban flight. This isn’t just a heliport. It’s a living piece of New York City’s history. It’s a testament to the city’s constant evolution and its ability to adapt to ever-changing needs.
