Is it possible to weave together the threads of history, industry, and fashion into a single compelling story? Absolutely. Here at the TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum, we celebrate Augsburg’s rich textile heritage.

The TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum is more than just a museum. It is a journey through time, showcasing the evolution of textile production in Bavaria. Specifically, it highlights Swabia and the historic city of Augsburg. The museum’s location is quite fitting. It resides within a former production hall of the Augsburg Kammgarn-Spinnerei. This was once a bustling hub in Augsburg’s textile district.

Our story begins with the vision of preserving Augsburg’s industrial past. In 1996, the “Verein zur Förderung eines Industriemuseums in Augsburg e. V.” was founded. This organization aimed to safeguard textile machinery and knowledge. Many local companies faced challenges due to the textile crisis. The association played a crucial role in acquiring and preserving machines.

The citysparkasse Augsburg made a significant contribution. It purchased the sample books of the Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik. This prevented their relocation to the Far East. These books are now recognized as German cultural heritage.

After years of planning, the TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum came to life. In 2003, the purchase agreement for part of the AKS factory buildings was finalized. The museum officially opened on January 20, 2010. The architectural transformation was led by Klaus Kada. The interior design was crafted by Atelier Brückner.

The permanent exhibition at the TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum covers 2,500 square meters. It focuses on “Mensch, Maschine, Muster, Mode” or “Man, Machine, Pattern, Fashion”. The museum explores the profound impact of the industrial age. It examines its effects on workers, factory owners, and bankers. Exhibits span from the 16th century to the textile industry’s crisis in the 20th century.

A highlight is the museum’s factory. Historic weaving looms stand alongside modern high-tech machines. These machines produce items like the “Schlosserhandtuch”. You can even purchase these items.

The TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum boasts a unique collection. It holds the world’s only fabric pattern archive from the Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik. These books contain over 1.3 million textile design ideas. Digitalized patterns are projected onto three-dimensional figures. This creates an immersive experience.

Fashion is also showcased. Garments from the Biedermeier era to contemporary designs are on display. The TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum also explores future trends, including carbon fiber applications.

Beyond the permanent exhibits, the TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum hosts special exhibitions. These exhibitions cover a range of topics.

The Förder- und Freundeskreis tim e.V. supports the museum. This group runs the museum shop and provides tour guides.

As you explore the TIM Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum, consider the countless threads that connect us to the past.
