In 1881, a small group of devout individuals from St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church embarked on a mission. They sought to establish a new spiritual home for the burgeoning communities of the west end and Chaneyville, later known as the Sixth Ward of Houston. This endeavor blossomed into the Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church was named in honor of its first pastor, the Reverend Louis Brown. Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. A sanctuary was built in 1882, a testament to the growing congregation’s faith. Tragedy struck in 1917 when a fire destroyed the original structure. Undeterred, the community rallied and began construction of the building that stands before you today. Originally a one-story frame structure, the Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was later expanded to two stories. In 1944, the exterior was clad in brick, giving it the appearance you see now. Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church continues to serve the Sixth Ward. It stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of the community it serves. The church embraces radical hospitality, welcoming people of all backgrounds. It offers a space for spiritual growth and community building. Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the rich history and unwavering faith of the Sixth Ward community.
