Did you ever hear of a university that had its own prison? Welcome to Uni Heidelberg Campus Altstadt. The Old University building isn’t just a beautiful piece of architecture. It holds centuries of stories within its walls, dating back to its construction between 1712 and 1728. Commissioned by Elector Johann Wilhelm, it was originally called “Domus Wilhelmiana” in his honor. Today, it houses the Rector’s Office, the university museum, and a rather unusual feature: the Studentenkarzer, or student prison. Imagine being a student in Heidelberg between 1780 and 1914. A night of revelry goes too far, disturbing the peace. You find yourself incarcerated in the university’s very own prison. Sentences ranged from two days to four weeks. Now, this wasn’t a harsh, Dickensian prison. Students were theoretically allowed to attend lectures, and life inside was relatively comfortable. The Studentenkarzer became a badge of honor. A place where students could escape lectures, decorate the walls with drawings and poems, and add to the prison’s unique legacy. Uni Heidelberg Campus Altstadt has carefully preserved these markings. They offer a glimpse into the lives and spirits of these rebellious students. Inside the Old University, you’ll also find the Great Hall. Redesigned in 1886 by Josef Durm, the hall now features paintings and busts honoring founders, innovators, benefactors, and prominent academics. It’s a place where history comes alive. Today, the Great Hall primarily hosts academic ceremonies. It also serves as a venue for concerts and lectures. The University Museum, located on the ground floor, takes you on a journey through the history of Germany’s oldest university. From its founding in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I to the end of the 20th century, the exhibits, portraits, and documents showcase the changing times. Uni Heidelberg Campus Altstadt is more than just a university. It’s a living testament to the evolution of education, student life, and the unique traditions of Heidelberg.
