Gazing upon the serene waters of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, who could imagine the bustling film sets that once stood here? Originally, this tranquil oasis in Pacific Palisades was part of the Inceville Motion Picture studio in the 1920s. Later, real estate magnate Alphonzo Bell Sr. attempted to level the canyon for development. This endeavor inadvertently birthed Lake Santa Ynez, the heart of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. In 1940, H. Everett McElroy, with a vision of a personal paradise, transformed the area. He imported a houseboat, constructed a mill house, and added a charming Dutch windmill. The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine’s journey took a mystical turn when the next owner, an oil company president, dreamt of the property as a “Church of All Religions.” He subsequently contacted Paramahansa Yogananda, who, remarkably, knew of the owner’s dream and intention to sell. Yogananda, recognizing the divine significance of the location, acquired the property. He transformed it into the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine we know today. Dedicated in 1950, the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine embraces the harmony of diverse faiths. The Court of Religions showcases symbols of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism. A statue of Jesus stands serenely above a waterfall, alongside figures of St. Francis and the Madonna and Child. The Mahatma Gandhi World Peace Memorial, a significant feature of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, houses a portion of Gandhi’s ashes within a thousand-year-old sarcophagus. The original Dutch windmill, envisioned by McElroy, now serves as a chapel within the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. The grounds boast lush gardens, waterfalls, and a variety of flora and fauna, inviting quiet contemplation. The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine has also touched the lives of many notable figures. Elvis Presley found solace and inspiration here, delving into Eastern philosophy. George Harrison’s funeral was held in the Windmill Chapel, a testament to the site’s spiritual resonance.
