Imagine setting foot inside Fort San Pedro. You are stepping back centuries. This triangular bastion is not just stone and history. It is a story etched in time.

Fort San Pedro stands as the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines. It marks the beginning of Spanish settlement here. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi ordered its construction in 1565.

Initially, Fort San Pedro was a simple wooden structure. Its purpose was defense against Muslim raiders. In the early 17th century, it was rebuilt with stone. What you see today largely dates back to 1738.

Notice the fort’s unique triangular shape. Two sides face the sea. Cannons once guarded these sides. The third side faces the land. A strong wooden fence once stood here. The fort has three bastions or watchtowers. They are named La Concepcion, Ignacio de Loyola, and San Miguel. Fourteen cannons were strategically placed. Many remain today.

In 1898, the Spaniards were defeated in Manila Bay. The fort was then surrendered to Cebuano rebels. They proudly raised the Philippine flag. However, their independence was short-lived.

In 1899, American forces took over Fort San Pedro. It became part of the Warwick Barracks. The fort was abandoned in 1917. The Cebu City Government then requested control. They envisioned a public park.

Between 1937 and 1941, the barracks transformed into school rooms. During the Japanese occupation, from 1942 to 1945, the fort became a Japanese stronghold. They dug trenches and tunnels to the sea. It even served as a hospital during the battle for liberation.

After the war, from 1946 to 1950, it served as an army camp. Later, the Cebu Garden Club created a mini-garden within the courtyard. Interestingly, from 1957, Fort San Pedro even housed the City Zoo.

In 1968, restoration plans began. The zoo was relocated. From 1978 to 1993, a government office occupied the fort.

Today, Fort San Pedro is under the care of the Cebu City government. It is a historical park. You can explore the museum. It showcases Spanish artifacts, documents, paintings, and sculptures.

The inner yard is a well-maintained park. It is often used for cultural events. The large lawn now hosts weddings and birthdays. Imagine the echoes of celebrations past and present.

Make sure to climb atop the bastions of Fort San Pedro for panoramic views. The elevated vantage points provide excellent photo opportunities.

Fort San Pedro is more than a relic. It’s a living chronicle of Cebu’s history. From Spanish stronghold to Japanese garrison, it has witnessed centuries. As you wander through Fort San Pedro, remember its layered past.
