Born in Souli around 1756 Notis Botsaris was a significant figure in Greek history. He belonged to the powerful Botsaris clan a prominent Souliote family. His life was intertwined with the turbulent events of the Greek Revolution.
Notis Botsaris wasn’t just any warrior. He was a leader. After his brother Kitsos Botsaris died Notis took the reins of the clan. This was a time of intense conflict with the Ottoman Empire. The Souliotes fiercely defended their independence. Notis played a pivotal role in these struggles.
One particular anecdote illustrates his courage. During a clash with Ottoman forces in Agrafa Notis was injured and captured. Imprisoned in the Kelcyre fortress he showed remarkable resilience. After six months of captivity he managed a daring escape. This act of bravery cemented his reputation.
His leadership extended beyond military prowess. He was involved in the third assembly of Western Greece. His influence was widespread. He even served Ali Pasha for a time under specific conditions. He was eventually invited to Ioannina. However a warning from Ali Pasha’s son Veli saved Notis from a planned ambush.
Following the fall of Preveza in 1820 Notis joined the siege of Ioannina. This was a campaign of revenge against Ali Pasha. Notis and his Souliotes fought relentlessly. They sought justice for past grievances.
Despite his contributions to the Greek Revolution his story takes a less celebrated turn. His house in Preveza which he acquired in 1806 stood until 1970. It was a testament to his presence in the region.
King Otto later honored Notis with the rank of Lieutenant General. This recognition acknowledged his significant military contributions. Yet the full extent of his impact went far beyond this formal title. It encompassed his leadership his resilience and his strategic role in a pivotal moment of Greek history.
Notis Botsaris died in Nafpaktos in 1841. His legacy though continues to resonate. His name is forever linked to the heroism and sacrifices of the Souliotes during the Greek War of Independence.
