Tucked away near the Brisbane Airport, the QUT Engineering Da Vinci Precinct isn’t your typical university building. It’s a hub of innovation, a place where drones take flight indoors and superconductivity experiments unfold. The QUT Engineering Da Vinci Precinct, also known as the DVP, began as a dedicated space for drone testing. Imagine a secure, indoor environment where unmanned aerial vehicles could be put through their paces, safe from the elements and prying eyes. This focus on cutting-edge technology set the stage for what the DVP would become. In 2021, the Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASL) team joined the DVP. They needed a large, warehouse-like space to house their industrial-scale prototypes and research test jigs. The DVP, with its high ceilings and open floor plan, was the perfect fit. Picture researchers working alongside massive experimental setups, pushing the boundaries of superconductivity. But the QUT Engineering Da Vinci Precinct offers more than just vast spaces. Adjacent to the main area is a specialized workshop dedicated to cryogenic experiments. Here, the Gifford-McMahon cryocooling system chills experiments down to a frigid 6 Kelvin, that’s -267.15 degrees Celsius. This allows for diverse cryostat configurations, providing flexibility for future cryogenic research. The QUT Engineering Da Vinci Precinct is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. It’s a place where drone technology meets superconductivity research, where large-scale experiments coexist with smaller workshop spaces, and where the future of engineering is being shaped.
