The narrative of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Los Angeles begins in 1960. Reverend Robert O. Waldschmidt was installed as a missionary. His mission was to serve San Mateo County. Three years later, the church’s constitution was signed, marking its official establishment. The present campus was acquired in 1964 for $95,000. This was a substantial sum at the time. It represented the largest land purchase for a new church by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
The cornerstone was laid in 1965. The church’s commitment to education led to the opening of Gloria Dei Lutheran School in 1970. The school initially operated within the church building. It began with a modest enrollment of eight students. A dedicated school building was constructed and dedicated in 1978. Gloria Dei continued to evolve.
