“Did you know that the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Eusebio e Maccabei martiri in Garbagnate Milanese wasn’t always here?” I ask my tour group. Their eyes widen slightly. I continue. “The original church dedicated to Saint Eusebius was in Milan itself. It stood proudly on Via Brera facing the Pinacoteca di Brera. That building however met its end in 1865.”

The Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Eusebio e Maccabei martiri we see today is a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a story of rebuilding and dedication. The original church’s origins are shrouded in some mystery. Tradition links its foundation to King Desiderius. The first concrete evidence of its existence however dates back to 1173.

The saint whom the church was originally dedicated to is not Eusebius of Milan but Eusebius of Vercelli. Church records show a longstanding celebration of his feast day. This confirms the Vercelli connection. The original building was quite small. It measured only 10 meters wide and 28 meters long. It housed two chapels. One was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine. The other served the Archinto family.

Archbishop Federico Borromeo oversaw a significant rebuilding project in 1620. Despite these renovations the church’s basic structure remained the same until its demolition. The current church in Garbagnate Milanese is a reflection of the community’s determination to keep the legacy of Saints Eusebius and the Maccabees alive.

This new church was a labour of love. It arose from the vision of Cardinal Schuster. Initially he desired a dedication to Saint Mary of Peace. He later suggested transferring the patronage of Saints Eusebius and the Maccabees. This decision honoured the earlier church.

The consecration ceremony took place on June 8 1940. Cardinal Schuster himself officiated. The church’s construction faced challenges. World War II impacted financial contributions. This didn’t diminish community spirit. The dedication to building the church shows unwavering faith during wartime hardships.

The church’s later history is also noteworthy. It’s a timeline marked by additions. A campanile was added in 1957. Its height of 64 meters became a source of local pride. The addition of a new altar in 1977 reflected the liturgical changes of the Second Vatican Council.

Today the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Eusebio e Maccabei martiri stands tall. It embodies more than just brick and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith. It’s a story of resilience. A story of community. A story that continues to unfold.
