Have you ever heard an organ play in a church? The Igreja Matriz de Santa Marinha do Zêzere, a beautiful Roman Catholic church, is located in the town of Santa Marinha do Zêzere, in the municipality of Baião, Portugal. This church dates back to the 11th century and boasts a rich history. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, with the impressive pipe organ being installed in 1793. The organ can only be found in Portugal, and its delicate sound has remained silent for many years. But fortunately, the church was renovated, with the organ being restored to its former glory in 2015. The restoration included the preservation of the historical organ, which was the work of the master organ builder José António de Sousa from Braga. The church itself was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in June 2015. The restoration project involved community funds alongside European Union funds. The new organ was inaugurated with a concert by the talented maestro, organist, musicologist and Professor Nuno Mimoso. The beautiful sounds of the historic organ echoed through the newly renovated church, filling the space with a sense of vibrancy and bringing a new life into the old church. The restored organ is a true testament to the rich cultural heritage of this small town, a place where the past and present merge together in a symphony of sound.
