In 1843, construction began on a bridge that would forever alter Hamburg’s cityscape. This bridge, the Reesendammbrücke, replaced the old Reesendamm. It gracefully arches over the Kleine Alster, connecting the Jungfernstieg promenade and Bergstraße. The Reesendammbrücke takes its name from Heinrich Reese. He was a 13th-century miller who operated a grain mill nearby. The bridge’s construction wasn’t just about creating a pathway. It involved relocating the second Alster barrage closer to the current town hall lock. This move significantly improved Hamburg’s flood control and water management. The Reesendammbrücke has witnessed Hamburg’s evolution. In 1934, the construction of the Jungfernstieg underground station required part of the bridge to be demolished and rebuilt. This station was the terminus of the Kelljunglinie. Later, in the late 1960s, the Reesendammbrücke became part of a major transit hub. The City S-Bahn station was built above the U-Bahn station. The Reesendammbrücke stands as a symbol of Hamburg’s ability to blend history with modernity. It elegantly combines its historical significance with its ongoing role as a vital artery in the city’s transportation network.
