Why was Santa Rosa de Lima’s original name Santa Rosa de Alipaya? Here we stand before the Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima, a church steeped in history, echoing the whispers of indigenous heritage and colonial whispers. Let’s journey back to 1735, when the Cacique Alipaya led his people to this very spot, establishing the first settlement, initially known as Santa Rosa de Alipaya. The fertile land whispered promises of abundance, transforming the nomadic tribe into settled agriculturalists, their hands shaping clay and crafting intricate artistry. The land flourished under their care, and by 1770, under the watchful eye of Cartagena’s Governor, Don Juan Torrelsa, Alipaya solidified his leadership, granting land to his people, nurturing a sense of community and civil society. Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima stands as a testament to his vision. The early homes, humble structures of bareque and palm, smeared with a mixture of cow dung, ash, and sand, reflected the simplicity of their lives, deeply intertwined with the land’s rhythms. The name changed again to Santa Rosa de Uveros, a nod to the lush vegetation, in particular the abundant Uvero trees. But the story of Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima takes a mystical turn. Two arroyos, Tabacal and Betancourt, often flooded the area, forcing the villagers to seek higher ground, the very place where the church now stands. One fateful day, during such a flood, a small statue of a virgin was discovered in the swirling waters of the arroyo Hormiga. Recognized as Santa Rosa de Lima, the patron saint of Peru, the statue was taken to the main church. Miraculously, it reappeared the next day, back where it had been found. An altar was built on that spot, and the villagers, captivated by this divine intervention, began to venerate her. When missionaries of the Order of Santa Rosa de Lima arrived, they embraced the villagers’ devotion, cementing Santa Rosa de Lima as the village’s patron saint. And so, the village transitioned from Santa Rosa de Alipaya to Santa Rosa de Uveros, and finally, to Santa Rosa de Lima, a name that resonates with faith, resilience, and a touch of divine mystery. Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima, more than just a building, is a living story, its walls whispering tales of transformation, faith, and the enduring spirit of a community.
