Schubert & Salzer Turm

Did Carl Schubert ever imagine his legacy would be a towering clock? We stand before the Schubert & Salzer Turm, a proud sentinel of Chemnitz’s industrial past. The tower, part of the former Schubert & Salzer textile machinery factory, whispers stories of innovation and resilience. In 1883, Carl August Schubert, a merchant, and Franz Bruno Salzer, a mechanical engineer, registered their workshop for building hosiery knitting machines. This modest start blossomed into Germany’s largest textile machinery factory. The Schubert & Salzer complex grew over time, marked by expansions and renovations. The striking 63-meter brick tower we admire today arose in 1927. Designed by architect Erich Basarke, it was a symbol of the company’s burgeoning success. The tower, with its clock, bell, decorative corbels, and battlements, became an iconic landmark. The clock, still ticking, reminds us of the vision of the factory’s founders. World War II brought devastation. Bombs ravaged the factory site on Lothringer Straße/Annaberger Straße. The main factory was dismantled after the war. In 1949, the site was re-established for textile machinery production. Yet, the name Wirkbau, derived from “Wirkmaschinenbau” (knitting machine construction), persists to this day. The Schubert & Salzer Turm stands as a testament to Chemnitz’s industrial heritage and a symbol of its enduring spirit. It’s a reminder that even amidst destruction, the drive to create and rebuild can prevail.
