Ever wonder about the story behind this beautiful building? This is Smithfield Market Hall. It stands as a testament to Manchester’s vibrant past. Today, Smithfield Market Hall houses a popular food hall. It’s known as Mackie Mayor. But its history goes back much further.

Smithfield Market Hall first opened in 1858. It replaced an earlier butchers’ area. The hall was built between 1857 and 1858. Iron trusses roofed it over in 1865. This provided a spacious and sheltered trading environment. The architect was Isaac Holden. He and his sons designed this neoclassical masterpiece.

The wider area got its name in May 1822. It became Smithfield Market because the potato market moved here in 1820. As the market grew in popularity more land was needed. More land was acquired in 1850.

At its peak in 1897, Smithfield Market covered four and a half acres. It stretched from Swan Street to Thomas Street. It ran from Shudehill to Oak Street. This vast marketplace offered everything imaginable.

Here at Smithfield Market Hall the public could find fresh fish. They could also buy meat, fruit, and vegetables. The market’s influence extended into Ancoats. It even helped create an ice-cream industry through the Italian community. Manchester Market Police kept order in the bustling market.

Mackie Mayor is the only fully intact building that remains from the former Smithfield Market. It opened in 1858. Originally, it served as a market hall. But it had been empty since the early 1990s. Other parts of the market have been repurposed. For example the fish market has been converted into other uses.

Sadly, the original Smithfield Market closed in 1972. Parts of the complex were demolished. The market stalls were relocated. They moved to West Gorton at the New Smithfield Market.

But this building was not forgotten. Smithfield Market Hall was Grade II listed in 1973. This designation protects its historical significance. In 2017, Smithfield Market Hall reopened after years of neglect. It was renovated. It now houses the Mackie Mayor food hall.

So, as you enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Mackie Mayor remember the history beneath your feet. Smithfield Market Hall has witnessed centuries of trade. It has also seen community and change in Manchester. It stands as a proud reminder of the city’s rich heritage.
