Mission Centers of Houston has a related history. It began in the 1940s. Primera Iglesia Bautista Houston started an outreach. It helped impoverished families. The ministry became the Mexican Goodwill Center. In 1962, the Union Baptist Association took over. Churches across Houston supported the work. Volunteers and donations poured in.
Mildred McWhorter directed the center. She was known as Miss Mac. For three decades, she was synonymous with service. The Fletcher Center provided food and clothing. They had after-school programs and ESL classes. Bible studies and worship services were offered.
The mission expanded. A second location opened on Gano Street. A third location opened in Magnolia Park. It was named the Joy Center. In 1980, the centers combined. They became Baptist Mission Centers.
Today, Mission Centers of Houston maintains close contact. They work with residents in the Near Northside. They also serve Magnolia Park. They use an integration-based approach. Staff members live in the communities. They understand the needs better.
