Did you know that Saint James’ Parish Church had a previous life? It wasn’t always here in Pollok. Originally known as Titwood Parish Church, it stood in Pollokshields.

Let’s step back in time. The late 19th century was a period of growth for Glasgow. In 1893 construction began on a new church in Glencairn Drive. Henry Edward Clifford designed this Neo-Gothic masterpiece. It opened its doors between 1893 and 1895. It served the Titwood Parish faithfully for many years.

Fast forward to 1941. The Titwood congregation united with the Pollokshields congregation. This union rendered the Titwood Parish Church building redundant. What to do with a beautiful church no longer needed?

A bold decision was made. The church would be dismantled. Piece by piece, it was carefully taken apart. Thomson, McCrea and Sanders oversaw this complex operation. Imagine the task of moving an entire Neo-Gothic church.

Between 1951 and 1953, the church found a new home in Pollok. Here, on Meiklerig Crescent, it was rebuilt. It was renamed Saint James’ Parish Church. During this period, the congregation had no dedicated place of worship. They met in a school hall. Later, they gathered in a simple wooden hut.

Finally, on September 3, 1953, Saint James’ reopened. The congregation rejoiced. Their beloved church had been given a new lease on life. It continues to serve the community today. The church is listed as a Category B building. This designation recognizes its architectural and historical significance.

Inside Saint James’, you will find beautiful stained-glass windows. Sunlight streams through them creating colorful patterns. Within the sanctuary there is a storytelling center. It is called ‘The Village’. This center hosts community events.

Saint James’ stands as a testament to faith and community. Its journey from Pollokshields to Pollok is a unique chapter in Glasgow’s history. Take a moment to appreciate the dedication and vision that brought this church to its present location. It continues to be a place of worship. It is a space for community engagement. Saint James’ Parish Church is more than just a building. It is a living story.
