Curious about where history whispers through the fields? Baigutun is our destination. Baigutun Town sits in Wuqing District, Tianjin. It is not in Beijing despite your expectations. This town carries stories from ancient times.

Baigutun is a place of fertile lands and steady streams. Imagine farmers working the soil as they have for generations. This area covers 51.7 square kilometers. That is about 20 square miles.

Baigutun has a history stretching back millennia. Archaeological finds reveal human activity here 7000 years ago. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, this land was part of Quanzhou and Yongnu counties.

Did you know Baigutun has changed names over time? Before the Jin Dynasty, it was called Baijiatun. This name came from the Bai family who settled here. During the Republic of China era, it became Baigutun. For a brief period, it was renamed Honggutun. In 1982, it went back to Baigutun.

Baigutun’s location has always been significant. It lies near the Beijing Drainage River and the Fenghe River. These waterways have supported agriculture and trade. The town is only 9 meters above sea level.

In 2017, Baigutun had a population of 21,617. The town includes 21 administrative villages. These villages contribute to the town’s rich agricultural output. Local specialties include Dongmafang shredded tofu and Shaoziying meat pigeon. These foods reflect the area’s culinary heritage.

The town government is located in Baigutun village. This village is where the Yuan Dynasty resettled officers. These officers built temples and pagodas. The area became known as Baijiatun pagoda.

After 1949, Baigutun’s villages went through several administrative changes. In 1958, they became part of the Chengguan Red Flag People’s Commune. Later, in 1961, the Dongmafang Commune was established. In 1984, it was renamed Baigutun Township. Finally, in 2013, it became Baigutun Town.

Today Baigutun continues to grow. It balances tradition with modern development. The town aims to be a bright spot in the Beijing-Tianjin area.

Baigutun offers a glimpse into China’s past. Its fertile lands, historic name changes, and local foods tell a story of resilience. The area’s long history shapes its identity even today.
