A century ago this very spot hummed with activity. The Southern Line a vital artery pulsed with life. This is the old Thon Buri Railway Station.

Here trains once embarked on epic journeys. They traversed the landscape. They connected Thailand to Malaya. This station wasn’t just a transportation hub. It held a piece of Thailand’s heart. It reflected its ambition. It witnessed its growth.

The original Thon Buri station a masterpiece of brick expressionism was designed by German architect Karl Döhring. Imagine its elegance. Envision the bustling crowds. Picture the steam engines hissing. Hear the rhythmic chugging of the trains. The air thick with the scent of coal smoke and anticipation.

Construction of this line began in 1900. It wasn’t easy. Challenges arose. Money was tight. The meter gauge chosen to connect seamlessly with Malaya’s railway network proved an innovative decision.

In 1903 the first section opened connecting Thon Buri to Phetchaburi. Makeshift carriages were used initially. The official opening a grand affair was graced by King Chulalongkorn himself.

For decades this station served as the starting point for journeys to Malaysia. The journey to Penang took 60 hours. This time was later reduced. This was thanks to the introduction of night trains and sleeping cars.

But this station’s story took a dark turn. During World War II allied air raids destroyed the original building. General Phibul Songkhram later ordered its reconstruction. He ensured it retained its original style.

The station’s closure in 2003 marked a poignant end. Its site now houses the Siriraj Phimukhsthan Museum. The museum silently guards the memories of this place’s vibrant past. The museum is a testament to the railway’s rich history. The museum stands on the site where the original station once stood.
