Did you ever imagine a home where the outdoors takes center stage? Here at La Scala, it’s not just a dream. La Scala is the brainchild of architects Ingrid Richards and Adrian Spence. It’s their private residence, perched on a cliffside in Bowen Hills, just north of Brisbane’s CBD. La Scala isn’t your typical home. It’s a concrete and masonry masterpiece. Four years of planning went into this unique design. The architects envisioned a house where the outdoor space became the heart of the home. One section was even sketched on a napkin during a holiday. La Scala offers glimpses of Mediterranean and Central/South American influences. Its bare masonry shines under Queensland’s brilliant blue skies. The outdoor area at La Scala is like a multi-level amphitheater. Full and half-height concrete blocks create tiered terraces filled with grass and plants. A shimmering pool acts as the centerpiece, reflecting light onto the surrounding walls. This placement is unusual, a deliberate inversion of the norm. Brisbane’s town planning regulations typically favor a house in the middle of the block, surrounded by a yard. Richards and Spence flipped the script. La Scala’s raw, light concrete blocks are perfect for Brisbane’s sunny climate. The material choice also reflects the architects’ focus on sustainability. The light-colored masonry is a common theme in their work, like the Calile Hotel. They prioritize longevity, designing buildings with adaptable uses beyond their initial purpose. La Scala could easily transform into a gallery or restaurant in the future. While the masonry may appear almost ruin-like in its raw detailing, La Scala has a glamorous, sun-drenched atmosphere perfect for entertaining. The monumental outdoor space is ideal for both private moments and parties. Imagine lying in the pool, facing the building. The silhouette of the sky creates a feeling of solitude. This tranquil oasis exists despite being near the city center. La Scala is more than just a home. It’s an architectural statement, a celebration of outdoor living, and a testament to sustainable design.
