A whisper of history hangs in the air. This is St Georg Kapelle in Freiburg im Breisgau. Right before you stands a testament to faith resilience and architectural evolution.

St Georg Kapelle boasts a history stretching back to 804. An ancient document reveals a church in the village of Hardkirch a precursor to today’s St Georgen district. This early church was eventually consecrated to St Georg in 1178. Its name however wasn’t officially recorded until 1322.

The building you see today isn’t the original. A larger church was needed. The congregation had outgrown the old Hardkirche which could only seat 400. In 1865 the old church was demolished. Its replacement a stunning structure designed by Lukas Engesser was built between 1866 and 1869. It followed the fashionable neo-Romanesque style reflecting the designs of Heinrich Hübsch. The new St Georg Kapelle faced the Basler Strasse the main thoroughfare a testament to its importance.

The transition wasn’t without controversy. The original architect Heinrich Hübsch envisioned a new church alongside the old one. His successor however opted for a complete replacement. This decision met with resistance from some residents of Uffhausen and Wendlingen. Ultimately the decision prevailed.

Notice the details. The baptismal font from around 1600 comes from the old Hardkirche. So does a Baroque statue of St Sebastian. The imposing St George figure above the entrance is the work of Franz Xaver Reich. Take a look at the high altar. A magnificent copy of a late Gothic altarpiece from Kaysersberg. Joseph Dettlinger created this masterpiece in 1896.

The organ too tells a story. Its origins lie in the workshop of Merklin and Fröhlich dating back to 1869. It has been rebuilt and renovated but still retains parts of its original character. It now has 34 registers across two manuals and pedal. The mechanical action adds to its charm.

The bell tower holds a four-bell chime. One bell is a relic from 1507. The others were cast in Heidelberg in 1962. These bells chime out the hours and quarter-hours a constant rhythm in the heart of St Georgen.

St Georg Kapelle stands not just as a place of worship but as a living chronicle. Its stones echo centuries of faith community and architectural artistry.
