A fiery legend unfolds before us. This is the Arunachaleswarar Temple Agni Stalam. We stand at the base of Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai. This magnificent temple is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalam. It represents the element of fire Agni.

Within these sacred walls Lord Shiva is worshipped as Arunachaleswarar or Annamalaiyar. His consort Parvati is revered as Unnamalai Amman. The temple’s Agni Lingam is a focal point of devotion. The 7th-century Tevaram a Tamil Saiva canonical work mentions the presiding deity. The 9th-century Saiva saint poet Manikkavasagar even wrote the Tiruvempaavai here.

Legend tells of a cosmic contest between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. They argued over supremacy. Lord Shiva appeared as a pillar of fire. He challenged them to find its beginning or end. Brahma took the form of a swan flying upwards. Vishnu became a boar digging downwards. Neither could find the end. Brahma lied claiming victory. Enraged Shiva cursed Brahma. No temple would be dedicated to him on Earth. The Arunachala Hills behind the Arunachaleswarar Temple are said to represent this very fire column. The lingam found everywhere symbolises this eternal flame.

The temple’s history stretches back to the 9th century. Chola kings built the current structure. The Vijayanagara Empire rulers including the Saluva and Tuluva dynasties expanded and renovated it. Before the 9th century Pallavas ruled the area. Appar and Sambandar ancient Tamil saints worshipped here. Chola kings frequented the temple for centuries. The Nawab of the Carnatic controlled it in the 17th century. Various Hindu and Muslim rulers followed until colonial rule.

The Arunachaleswarar Temple’s architecture is awe-inspiring. The east-facing temple covers over 25 acres. Its walls stretch for hundreds of feet. Four gopurams gateway towers stand tall. The Rajagopuram the eastern tower is the tallest. King Krishnadevaraya started its construction. Sevappa Nayaka completed it in 1572 CE. The temple has five precincts. Each houses a massive Nandi Shiva’s sacred bull.

The Karthigai Deepam festival is a highlight. A massive beacon is lit atop Arunachala Hill. It represents the Shiva lingam of fire. It is visible for miles. Millions witness this spectacular event every year. Devotees perform Girivalam a circumambulation around Arunachala Hill. They walk nearly 14 kilometres barefoot. This is believed to bring spiritual benefits.

Arunachaleswarar Temple Agni Stalam stands as a testament to faith and devotion. It’s a place of profound spiritual significance. Its history legends and architecture captivate all who visit. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire awe and wonder.
