Gazing upon Bethelder Baptist Church, one might sense the echoes of history whispering through its weathered bricks. Bethelder Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Houston’s African American community. This church, located at 801 Andrews in the historic Fourth Ward, has witnessed a century of triumphs and tribulations. Bethelder Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living story etched in stone and spirit.

The story of Bethelder Baptist Church begins with Reverend Jack Yates, a towering figure in Houston’s African American community after the Civil War. In 1891, he led a group of parishioners from Antioch Baptist Church to establish a new spiritual home. That home was Bethelder Baptist Church, nestled in the heart of Freedmen’s Town. The original wooden structure, built in 1889, was a beacon of hope for former slaves. Tragically, the Great Storm of 1900 swept it away. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt, only to see their second church also succumb to time. Then, in 1923, the current Late Gothic Revival structure arose. This building, designed by architects Blount, John L. and Thomas, James M., became a symbol of resilience.

The church thrived under the leadership of various pastors. Reverend Ned P. Pullum, Reverend John Jason Blackshear, Reverend John Edward Knox, Reverend Christopher Columbus Harper, Reverend James R. Burdett, and Reverend Will Henry Dudley all guided the congregation through different eras. Each left their mark on Bethelder Baptist Church, shaping its identity and strengthening its community. In 1971, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Melrose Alpha Nimmo, the congregation moved to a new location on Selinsky Road. The original building on Andrews was eventually abandoned in 1997. A devastating fire in 2005 gutted the interior, leaving only the exterior walls standing.

The fate of Bethelder Baptist Church seemed uncertain. Yet, like the congregation it once housed, the building found new life. The City of Houston purchased the historic church in 2009. They stabilized the structure, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Bethelder Baptist Church now stands as a poignant reminder of Houston’s rich history. It’s a story of faith, perseverance, and the power of community.
