The University of Houston – Clear Lake is a relatively young institution, founded in 1971. However, its roots are firmly planted in the legacy of the space race. In the early 1960s, NASA announced it would establish the Manned Spacecraft Center just across Clear Lake. This resulted in an immediate need for highly skilled engineers and scientists to support the space program.

Knowing this demand, the University of Houston started offering physics, math, and engineering courses for NASA employees at the Manned Spacecraft Center. In 1968, the Coordinating Board of Texas College and University System authorized the building of the Clear Lake Graduate Center (CLGC). In 1971, the 62nd Texas Legislature authorized the creation of the University of Houston at Clear Lake City as a separate degree-granting institution. In 1974, the first phase of construction began on the Bayou Building, which stands proudly as the heart of the UH-Clear Lake campus today. The first-class day enrollment at the university was 1069 students.

Today University of Houston – Clear Lake boasts more than 9000 students and awards more than 2100 degrees annually.
