Is there a building that defies gravity? Here at Gate 4, we’re about to explore one. It’s the Capital Gate, also known as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi. This skyscraper redefines architectural boundaries.

Capital Gate is more than just a building. It’s a statement. It stands over 160 meters tall with 35 stories. Inside, you’ll find over 16,000 square meters of office space.

What makes Capital Gate truly remarkable? It inclines 18 degrees west. That’s more than four times the lean of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This incredible lean earned it a Guinness World Record. Capital Gate is the world’s “farthest manmade leaning building”.

The construction of Capital Gate was an engineering feat. It began in September 2007. The building reached its final height in October 2009. Construction completed in 2011, and it officially opened on December 21, 2011.

Consider the foundation. It rests on 490 pilings drilled 30 meters below ground. These pilings provide stability against strong winds, gravitational pull, and seismic pressures.

The core of Capital Gate used climbing formwork. The concrete core contains 15,000 cubic meters of concrete. It’s reinforced with 10,000 metric tons of steel. The core was built with a slight opposite lean. As each floor was installed, the weight slowly straightened the core.

Given the building’s 18-degree lean, two diagrid systems were needed. An external diagrid defines the tower’s shape. An internal diagrid links to the central core. The external grid carries the floor’s weight. The internal diagrid transfers the load to the core. This eliminates the need for columns on the floor.

RMJM, an architectural firm, designed Capital Gate. The diagrid system absorbs forces created by wind and seismic loading. Capital Gate is one of a few diagrid buildings in the world. Others include London’s 30 St Mary Axe and New York’s Hearst Tower.

Inside Capital Gate, you will find the Andaz Hotel on floors 18 through 33.

As we stand here at Gate 4, look at Capital Gate. It is a testament to human ingenuity and architectural innovation. It reminds us to challenge limits and redefine what’s possible.
