Hidden on Roosevelt Island, Dayspring Church whispers tales of resilience. This unassuming gneiss structure, dwarfed by modern developments, began its life in 1924. It served as the Episcopal Chapel of the Holy Spirit for Metropolitan Hospital. Imagine the hushed prayers and quiet moments of solace within its walls. The stained-glass windows, now cracked and broken, once bathed the chapel in colorful light. Dayspring Church holds a unique history. When Metropolitan Hospital moved to Manhattan in 1955, the chapel was largely abandoned. Yet, the hospital chaplain found solace in the attached rectory. He remained there until the 1990s, a testament to the building’s enduring charm. In 1997, the Redeemed Christian Church of God breathed new life into the forgotten chapel, renaming it Dayspring Church. They invested nearly a million dollars in rent, repairs, and updates over the following two decades. However, financial struggles plagued the church, leading to their eviction in 2019. The church faced a staggering $60,000 debt in back rent and interest. They also needed an additional $50,000 for essential building repairs. Despite these challenges, Dayspring Church’s story embodies the spirit of perseverance. It stands as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of Roosevelt Island, where history and modernity intertwine.
