What if walls could whisper tales of noble families and artistic grandeur? Welcome to the Museo di Palazzo Mirto. This historic palace in Palermo was home to the Filangeri family for centuries. Later, it became the residence of the Lanza Filangieri Principi di Mirto. The palace gets its name from them. For four centuries, it stood as a testament to Sicilian aristocracy.

Let’s step inside. Imagine the clip-clop of horses echoing from the ground floor. Here, you would find stables, carriage houses, kitchens and even prisons. The horsewoman area stands out. It is the most important stable area of noble palaces. Picture a large room with cross vaults. A double colonnade divides it. At the end, there is a stone basin. This served as a drinking trough.

Ascend the grand staircase crafted from red marble to the noble floor. It is a monumental sight. The Museo di Palazzo Mirto is filled with art and history. The Sala d’Ingresso greets you with mythological frescoes. Diana and Callisto grace the vaults. In the Sala del Novelli, admire the artist’s self-portrait. Eros and Anteros adorn the ceiling.

The Sala del Salvator Rosa showcases scenes from Orlando Furioso. Paintings attributed to Salvatore Rosa decorate this room. Can you envision the Stanza del Teatrino? It once was the palace’s chapel. Later, it became a study. Explore the Salotto Rosa. It features Jan Bruegel’s battle scene. Another painting depicts the Battle of Cialdiran.

Don’t miss the Salottino Cinese. It is decorated with oriental silks and paintings. The Fumoir, or Salottino in cuoio di Cordoba, offers a glimpse into smoking culture. The Salone degli Arazzi is a highlight. Giuseppe Velasco’s paintings depict the myth of Amor and Psyche. Silk tapestries show mythological subjects like Venus and Adonis.

The Salone del Baldacchino is the main hall. Elia Interguglielmi decorated it in 1795. It illustrates the Glory of the Virtuous Prince. Allegorical figures of the seasons surround it. The four cardinal virtues are also depicted. A young woman holding a myrtle branch symbolizes love. This plant is sacred to Aphrodite. It is a symbol of the Filangeri family.

The Museo di Palazzo Mirto also holds musical treasures. An organ and Viennese pianos from 1820 are on display. These instruments once filled the palace with music.

Moving to the second floor, you’ll find more intimate rooms. The Salotto dello Spagnoletto features a painting of Saint Onofrio. Giuseppe Velasco’s nudes are in the Salotto Verde. The libraries hold antique and rare volumes. They also contain art objects.

In 1982, Donna Maria Concetta Lanza Filangieri di Mirto donated the palazzo to the Sicilian Region. She wanted to create a museum. Her brother, Stefano Lanza Filangeri, expressed this wish in his will. Today, the Museo di Palazzo Mirto offers an immersive experience. It shows Sicilian culture and aristocratic life.
