Marvelous Akshardham Temple stands tall. It is a breathtaking spectacle in Delhi. This magnificent temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage. Inspired by Yogiji Maharaj and created by Pramukh Swami Maharaj it was constructed by BAPS. The temple was officially opened on November 6 2005. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Manmohan Singh L.K Advani and B.L Joshi were present. The temple’s central position is maintained. There are exhibition halls with information on Swaminarayan’s life. Contemporary communication and technology are used.

The Akshardham Mandir is the main attraction. It rises 43 meters high spans 96 meters wide and extends 109 meters long. Intricate carvings depict flora fauna dancers musicians and deities. It is located on the Yamuna River’s banks. It was designed by BAPS Swamis and Virendra Trivedi. Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble were used. Traditional Hindu architectural guidelines were followed. No ferrous metal was used. The architecture is inspired by the Maru-Gurjara style.

The mandir has 234 pillars nine domes and 20000 murtis. The Gajendra Pith is at its base. It contains 148 life-sized elephants. A 3.4-meter-high murti of Swaminarayan is under the central dome. He is surrounded by images of the faith’s lineage of Gurus. Each murti is made of panchadhatu five metals. The temple also houses murtis of Sita-Rama Radha-Krishna Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayana.

Exhibits include the Sahajanand Darshan Hall of Values. Lifelike robotics and dioramas show incidents from Swaminarayan’s life. Nilkanth Darshan is a theatre with a large format screen. It shows a 40-minute film on Swaminarayan’s pilgrimage. Sanskruti Vihar is a boat ride through 10000 years of Vedic India’s heritage. A musical fountain the Yagnapurush Kund is India’s largest stepwell. At night there is a musical fountain show called Sahaj Anand. Gardens include the Garden of India and Yogi Hraday Kamal. Additional features include Nilkanth Abhishek Narayan Sarovar and Premvati Ahargruh. The AARSH Centre is for research on social harmony.
