In the heart of this neighborhood stands Mickey Markey Playground, a testament to the resilience and spirit of New Orleans. It’s more than just a place for kids to swing and slide, but a gathering place for the community to come together and play.
Born out of the ashes of Hurricane Katrina, this playground symbolizes a new beginning for this vibrant neighborhood. It was a group of 15 students from the UK who were so moved by the devastation that they came to New Orleans and worked tirelessly to redesign a community park in the Bywater. Their vision included a space for dogs to run free, a playground to bring joy to kids, and an open field for events like the annual Mirliton festival.
While the children might just enjoy the swings and slides, their parents and grandparents can often be found enjoying the open spaces surrounding the playground. The neighborhood often comes together for festivals and events, bringing life to the park and further showcasing the strength of the Bywater community.
