Gazing up at the Lotus Pagoda, have you ever wondered about the mountain it graces? This, my friends, is Lianhuashan Scenic Area, or Lotus Hill, a place where history, legend, and breathtaking beauty intertwine. Just 30 kilometers from the heart of Guangzhou, Lotus Hill rises from the Pearl River Delta, a cluster of 48 red sandstone peaks. Its beauty earned it the title “Pearl of Southern Guangdong”. And it’s more than just a pretty face. It holds a coveted AAAA national rating, recognition of its historical and cultural significance.

Lotus Hill’s story is etched in stone, literally. For over two millennia, this mountain was a quarry. The ancient quarry relics stand as a testament to the tireless hands that shaped this landscape. Imagine workers, armed with chisels and hammers, carving out the very cliffs and caves we see today. Their unintentional artistry gave birth to the “man-made Danxia” wonder, a spectacle so unique it earned national protection in 2001. Among these stone giants, the Swallow Rocks command attention. Swallows nest within the gaps of these massive stones, giving the rocks their name. From Eagle Cliff, you can survey the patchwork of farmlands below, a testament to the harmony between man and nature.

But Lotus Hill’s story delves into the realm of myth as well. Legend whispers of a ferocious dragon that terrorized the Pearl River Delta. The Goddess of Mercy, moved by the suffering of the people, cast her lotus seat into the water. This divine intervention subdued the dragon. Over time, the lotus seat transformed into stone, forever guarding the mountain and its people. This legendary lotus gave the mountain its name, Lianhuashan, Lotus Hill.

Rising from the mountain’s main peak, the Lotus Pagoda stands as a beacon of history and faith. Built in 1612, during the Ming Dynasty, the nine-story pagoda originally bore the name “Wenchang Pagoda”. Inside, eleven levels spiral towards the heavens. The 50-meter pagoda has witnessed its share of turmoil, even enduring bombardment in the 1930s. Thanks to the generosity of Hong Kong and Macao compatriots, the pagoda was restored to its former glory in 1981 and 1997. Climbing to the top rewards you with a panoramic view of the shimmering Pearl River.

Adding to Lotus Hill’s spiritual aura is the world’s tallest bronze Guanyin statue, covered in gold foil. Completed in 1994, this 40.88-meter statue, cast from 120 tons of bronze and adorned with 9,000 grams of gold, gazes serenely over the landscape.

Lotus Hill is not just a place of history and legend; it’s a vibrant destination. The modern additions, including the Wanghai Guan Yin, holiday village, restaurants, a dance hall, coffee shop, barbecue area, and even a shooting range, create a space for everyone. Spring brings the vibrant Peach Blossom Festival. Summer ushers in the Lotus Festival, a riot of color with over 100 varieties of lotus flowers on display.
