Marvel at Kasteel Beaulieu’s imposing Baroque facade. This magnificent structure in Machelen a short distance from Brussels whispers tales of centuries past. Built in 1654 by the influential Tour and Taxis family it was originally called Belvédère. The renowned architect Lucas Fayd’herbe designed it using locally sourced sandstone. The large windows typical of urban palaces offered stunning views of the Woluwe Valley hence its name Beaulieu meaning beautiful place.

Kasteel Beaulieu has witnessed remarkable changes. Gio Paolo Bombarda founder of Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie resided here from 1697 to 1712. Later it belonged to prominent banker Frédéric de Romberg and Baron François-Joseph-Louis de Godin further solidifying its place in Belgian history.

The 19th century brought alterations under the d’Alcantara family. They possibly relocated the entrance and transformed the Hercules Hall into a grand vestibule. The castle retained its charm despite the encroaching industrialization. Its picturesque park and serene ponds remained.

The 20th century presented challenges. Industrialization impacted its surroundings. The castle was sold and its park divided. However restoration efforts began in the late 1940s culminating in the protection of the Hercules Hall in 1950.

Early in the 21st century renovations breathed new life into Kasteel Beaulieu. The reopening of its circular moats and the hosting of art exhibitions transformed it into a vibrant cultural hub. Today visitors marvel at the intricate stucco work of 17th-century artist Jan-Christian Hansche adorning the castle’s interiors.
