Within the walls of Boggo Road Gaol, echoes of Brisbane’s past linger. Boggo Road Gaol, initially known as Brisbane Gaol, opened its imposing gates in July 1883. It quickly became a landmark, its red brick walls and guard tower looming over Annerley Road. Boggo Road Gaol wasn’t just a prison; it was a stage for some of Queensland’s most dramatic stories. Originally designed as a short-term holding facility for 40 male prisoners awaiting transfer to St Helena Island, it eventually housed thousands over its 109 years of operation. The gaol’s early notoriety stemmed from its role as a place of execution. Forty-two prisoners met their end on the gallows, a grim chapter in Boggo Road’s history. The last execution, that of Ernest Austin in 1913, marked the end of capital punishment in Queensland. In 1903, a separate women’s prison was built, known as Number Two Division. This division, intended to implement a “separate system” with individual cells, later housed long-term male prisoners from St Helena Island. Boggo Road Gaol held individuals from all walks of life. From notorious criminals like the Whiskey Au Go Go bombers, James Finch and Andrew Stuart, to the legendary escape artist “Slim” Halliday, the “Houdini of Boggo Road,” its walls witnessed a parade of personalities. Even Australian surfing legend Michael Peterson and former President of the Australian Senate, Gordon Brown, spent time within its confines. Beyond the infamous names, Boggo Road housed thousands of ordinary people whose stories, though less sensational, painted a vivid picture of Brisbane’s past. The gaol became a microcosm of society, holding prostitutes, burglars, political protesters, and even fine evaders. In the 1980s, Boggo Road Gaol became the focus of national attention. A series of escapes, riots, and rooftop protests, driven by the deplorable conditions within Number Two Division, brought the prison’s issues to light. These events ultimately led to the closure of Number Two Division in 1989, and the entire complex in 2002. Today, only Number Two Division remains, a heritage-listed testament to Boggo Road Gaol’s complex and often controversial history.
