“A sanctuary of serenity,” whispered a monk, his saffron robes flowing as he gestured towards Wat Phasi. Wat Phasi. A royal wat nestled in Bangkok’s Phasi Charoen district along the Chao Phraya River. Wat Phasi isn’t just a temple. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, spirituality, and community. Established in 1610, Wat Phasi has witnessed the ebb and flow of Thai history. It thrived under royal patronage. It faced near abandonment by the turn of the 20th century. Then, a remarkable revival. Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro, a charismatic meditation master, breathed new life into Wat Phasi. His Dhammakaya tradition became a cornerstone of the temple’s identity, attracting hundreds of monks and mae chi. Luang Pu Sodh’s legacy continues to resonate at Wat Phasi. His teachings and guided meditations are still cherished. His emphasis on both learning and meditation shaped the temple’s approach to spiritual practice. After Luang Pu Sodh’s passing, Somdet Chuang Varapuñño took the helm. His leadership saw Wat Phasi expand its charitable work and community engagement. The temple became known for its nationwide project to promote the five Buddhist precepts. A notable event was the completion of the Maharatchamongkhon stupa in 2012. This towering structure, a blend of Rattanakosin and Lanna architecture, houses a meditation hall, museum, and relic room. Its stunning cosmological paintings are a testament to Buddhist artistry. Wat Phasi also boasts a magnificent bronze Buddha image, Phra Buddha Dhammakāya Thepmongkhon. Completed in 2021, this 69-meter-tall statue depicts the meditation posture taught by Luang Pu Sodh. A beacon of serenity, it draws visitors from near and far. Wat Phasi also holds a unique position in the landscape of female Buddhist practice. It has a large mae chi community, offering them opportunities for meditation, study, and community service. Wat Phasi also continues to foster international connections. Branch centers have been established in countries like the United States, New Zealand, India, and Japan. These centers serve as hubs for meditation practice and cultural exchange. Today, Wat Phasi continues to thrive as a place of worship, learning, and community service. As you stand before Wat Phasi, take a moment to absorb its peaceful atmosphere. Listen closely. You might just hear the whispers of history and the echoes of countless prayers, a testament to the enduring spirit of Wat Phasi.
