Lakewood United Church of Christ

Stepping onto the grounds of Lakewood United Church of Christ, one can almost feel the echoes of its rich history. Lakewood United Church of Christ has been a cornerstone of the community since its inception in 1953. Founded by Pastor Martin Murray Jr. and 35 devoted charter members, this church has witnessed decades of growth and transformation. The original sanctuary, built in 1955, underwent remodeling in 1966, further shaping its identity. A more extensive renovation in 2003 breathed new life into the entire building, preparing it for the future. Originally named Lakewood Community Congregational Church, the church officially became Lakewood United Church of Christ in 1965, marking its affiliation with the United Church of Christ. This denomination itself has a fascinating history, born from the 1957 merger of the Congregationalist Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Lakewood United Church of Christ has always been a beacon of inclusivity. In 2001, it declared itself an Open and Affirming church, reaffirming and expanding this commitment in 2021. This commitment welcomes individuals of all sexual orientations, demonstrating a true spirit of acceptance and love. The church’s dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in its adoption of the Care for Creation covenant in 2018. This commitment reflects a deep respect for the planet and a responsibility to protect God’s creation. Lakewood United Church of Christ’s commitment to social justice extends beyond its walls. Its membership in Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence (CFCU) speaks volumes about its dedication to creating a safer and more peaceful world. The church has also been blessed with strong leadership. Reverend Curtis Preston became Pastor in 2008, guiding the congregation with wisdom and compassion. In 2018, Reverend Mollie Landers Hatt joined as the first full-time Associate Pastor, further strengthening the church’s ministry. Lakewood United Church of Christ continues to be a place where faith flourishes, community thrives, and service makes a difference. Its mission “to develop our faith in God, enabling us to know the abundant life Christ promised” is woven into every aspect of its existence.
