Founded in 1888, Bethlehem Lutheran Church holds a special place. It is the oldest historically Black ELCA congregation in the continental United States. For over 130 years, Bethlehem Lutheran Church has served the Central City neighborhood.
But Bethlehem Lutheran is more than just a church with a long history. It’s a beacon of hope. It actively responds to the needs of its neighbors. The Community Table is a shining example. This ministry offers free gourmet meals every week. No questions asked. ELCA World Hunger supports this vital program.
Central City faces significant challenges. The median household income is significantly lower than the national average. Food insecurity affects more than 15% of the people in Orleans Parish. Bethlehem Lutheran Church stands in the gap.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for food assistance skyrocketed. Bethlehem Lutheran Church stepped up. The Community Table expanded its services. It began providing free lunch four times a week. They served over 600 meals weekly.
Chef De played a crucial role in this effort. She planned, coordinated, supervised, cooked, and served countless meals. Pastor Ben Groth acknowledges her importance. He believes Bethlehem Lutheran Church wouldn’t have survived the pandemic without her. Many neighbors also relied on her dedication.
Central City has a rich history. It is home to New Zion Baptist Church. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was formally incorporated there. Despite this, some have defined Central City by its challenges. Crime and poverty have cast a shadow.
But Bethlehem Lutheran Church offers a different perspective. It embodies the message of Christ crucified. It acknowledges suffering and injustice. Yet, it affirms God’s presence in the community. Stories of poverty and hunger aren’t the only stories here.
Bethlehem Lutheran Church reminds us to seek God in unexpected places. God is revealed in the stories of our neighbors. Even when the world sees foolishness, we find gospel truth. The Community Table embodies this truth. Neighbors prepare, provide, and share meals together.
