Did you know that West Catholic Preparatory High School wasn’t always called that? This imposing building on 45th and Chestnut Streets in University City has a rich history. It’s more than just brick and mortar. It’s a legacy woven from two separate schools.
West Catholic Preparatory High School as we know it today emerged from a merger in 1989. Before that there was West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys founded in 1916. There was also West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Girls which opened its doors in 1927. Imagine the excitement the merging of these two institutions must have created. A new chapter began for the students and staff alike.
Initially both schools served students from West Philadelphia Southwest Philadelphia and Delaware County. Over time its reach narrowed to focus more locally. The opening of suburban Catholic high schools in the 1950s and 1960s changed the landscape. West Catholic’s student body primarily came from West and Southwest Philadelphia. Then open enrollment in the 1990s broadened its appeal again drawing students from across the city and its suburbs.
In 2012 a proposal to close West Catholic shocked the community. Alumni rallied. A generous anonymous donation of $1 million saved the school. This significant contribution along with continued fundraising efforts demonstrated the community’s deep commitment to preserving its legacy. The school not only survived but thrived. In 2013 it officially adopted its current name West Catholic Preparatory High School. This reflected a renewed focus on preparing students for their future.
West Catholic Preparatory High School has achieved remarkable academic success. It earned the prestigious Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award multiple times. Its graduates have gone on to attend prestigious universities such as Swarthmore NYU Georgetown Columbia Stanford Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. The school also boasts a strong athletic program with a winning football team and numerous basketball championships throughout its history. West Catholic has a diverse student body with a strong Catholic identity. It maintains close partnerships with nearby universities such as the University of Pennsylvania Drexel University and the University of the Sciences.
