Dare to imagine a time before nuclear submarines. A time when naval warfare was revolutionized by a small hand-cranked vessel. Right here before us lies the H L Hunley. This Confederate submarine made history. It was the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy warship. This feat occurred during the American Civil War.

The H L Hunley’s story begins long before its construction. As early as April 1861 President Abraham Lincoln ordered a blockade of Confederate ports. This blockade severely hampered the Confederacy’s ability to receive supplies. Desperate to break the blockade the Confederacy turned to innovation. They turned to underwater warfare.

Horace Hunley James McClintock and Baxter Watson were the brilliant minds behind the H L Hunley. These men weren’t novices. They had already built two experimental submarines the Pioneer and the American Diver. The Pioneer successfully sank a schooner in Lake Pontchartrain. However the American Diver proved less successful. It ultimately failed to break the Union blockade.

The H L Hunley was different. This sleek submarine was designed for a specific purpose. It was built to slip beneath Union ships and plant a torpedo. This was a daring strategy. It was a deadly gamble. The submarine underwent several modifications. Initially it towed a torpedo on a long tether. However later it used a spar torpedo. This torpedo was attached directly to the bow of the Hunley.

The H L Hunley had its share of tragedies. It sank twice in Charleston harbor before its successful mission. The first time five of its eight crew members perished. The second time the entire crew including Horace Hunley himself lost their lives. Despite these setbacks the H L Hunley’s creators persevered. Their determination paid off.

On February 17 1864 the H L Hunley made history. It attacked the USS Housatonic a Union warship. The attack was successful. The Housatonic sank within minutes. However the Hunley vanished soon after. The submarine and its crew remained lost for over 130 years.

The H L Hunley’s rediscovery in 2000 was an extraordinary event. The raising of the submarine was a major undertaking. The recovery of the crew’s remains brought about another story. The discovery of a gold coin inscribed “Shiloh April 6th 1862 My Life Preserver GED” led to the identification of Lieutenant George Dixon. Dixon’s coin had saved his life during the Battle of Shiloh. This coin became a powerful symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of the Hunley’s crew.

The H L Hunley’s story is a tale of ingenuity courage and sacrifice. This submarine holds a place of honor in naval history. Its legacy lives on in the museums and historical archives. This submarine is a powerful testament to human ingenuity during a time of war. It is a timeless reminder of a pivotal moment in naval warfare.
