Matador Field is more than just a baseball venue. It’s a piece of CSUN history. It opened on March 4 1961. The Matadors lost their inaugural game 10-8 to Claremont-Mudd. Since then it’s been the stage for countless games victories and memorable moments.
The field has seen major renovations. In 1975 a three-year project added a new infield scoreboard batting cages and more. A clubhouse joined the dugout in 1981. A new infield arrived in 1993 followed by a new scoreboard and video replay screen in 1996. More recently a $15 million renovation was planned. This ambitious project promises to elevate Matador Field to new heights. It includes expanded seating new concessions and a state-of-the-art team building. A new LED video board finally debuted in 2024. For the 2025 season Matador Field received a new name. It is now Robert J Hiegert Field. This honors the long-time coach and two-time national champion. It will also have lights for the first time. This makes it one of the last Division-1 fields without lights on the West Coast.
